Snowhotel Kirkenes
Kirkenes, Norway
Snowhotel Kirkenes stands in the far north-east of Norway, close to the Russian border and well above the Arctic Circle, and the snow structure at its centre is rebuilt from scratch every winter. Nothing of one season's hotel survives into the next; the carved rooms, the corridors and the ice bar are all made again.
Sleeping in a snow room means a temperature that hovers a few degrees below freezing regardless of the weather outside, an insulated bag on a bed of ice, and a warm building nearby for changing and washing. Most guests do one night in the snow and the rest in the timber cabins on the same site, which operate through the year.
The surrounding operation — husky kennels, reindeer, a fjord — is part of why people travel this far, and the hotel is organised around daylight hours that in midwinter barely exist.
